"In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul." Ps. 94:19
Today as we visit, sit in your most comfortable spot and use your favorite mug or cup. It's our coffee time.
I want you to think of one or two examples that you consider being "comfort things". By "comfort things" I mean those things you cling to when you are pressed, stressed, lonely, or just out-of-sorts. We all have those "comfort" props; that fleeting fix that helps us forget the moment. The favorite food, the robe, a hobby, spending money, or even a luxurious "Calgon take-me-away" bubble bath.
My favorite comforts are twofold: a mid-afternoon nap and my favorite fast food meal. I can think back to the many times I have moved my daughters, only to find myself missing them the moment I pull away ... Whataburger, here I come--the #8 on my mind! It was a fleeting fix that would satisfy me for the moment, getting my mind temporarily off of the pain I was feeling.
Ps. 94:19 refers to the "multitude of thoughts within me." Those thoughts can result in feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and even fearful. When our thoughts overwhelm us, it is at that time we can find true rest and comfort in the words "thy comforts delight my soul." The comforts of God can become the sanctuary for our minds and hearts; it is His divine comforts that give delight and satisfaction. His comforts are a continual satisfaction to us and not a mere fleeting fix.
Let's take a moment and acknowledge some of God's comforts that delight and satisfy our heart and mind I'll give you a few of mine---His unfailing love, the forgiveness of sin, eternal life, His faithfulness, mercy, kindness and the fact that He delights in us and sings over us. You know I could go on and on and you could too. Take a second and name your comforts of God and find your self being comforted and delighted by the Father. What sweet peace and rest we find in Him.
It's okay to enjoy your "comfort" thing, but I would challenge you to go one step further. Allow God and His Word to bring genuine comfort to your heart. It truly is the only thing that will bring lasting satisfaction.
I will still at times order my #8, which is the two chicken strips, fries, Texas toast with gravy, and a Dr. Pepper, but more that that...I will name back to God all the ways He delights and comforts my heart through His Word. His promises are guaranteed to satisfy. I look forward to our next time together!
